Mike Tiner, Director of Research Laboratories

Mike Tiner has managed major research facilities such as cleanrooms, microscopy facilities and materials testing labs for the past decade. During the past 20 years Tiner has been significantly involved in the construction, specification and outfitting of major facilities such as University of Texas at Austin Center for Nano and Molecular Science and Technology, Advanced Micro Devices Fab 25, and the Masdar Institute Fabrication Cleanroom, Microscopy Facility, Electrical and Device Testing labs and several other smaller labs for industry and academia.

Tiner has strong practical background beginning with his early life on a farm in Utah, USA, and progressing through various jobs in construction and finally an extended military career before studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. During his time at UT Austin, Tiner was exposed to the world of advanced materials, analytical tools and complex scientific apparatus. From that point on Tiner focused on learning and teaching these technologies to others and considers himself a science “evangelist.”

Tiner was exposed to the world of electron microscopy almost 22 years ago when he took a temporary position in the process characterization lab at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in Austin, Texas, USA. Six years later, as weekend lab manager and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyst for Motorola Advanced Products Research and Development Laboratory (APRDL) in Austin Texas, and a further six years later at TEXSem Labs in Draper, Utah, USA, as a product manager for a line of automated crystallography products, the drive to learn and master these techniques was still strong.

Tiner is currently focused on building research laboratory capabilities and driving the growth of research communities in the UAE at the Masdar Institute. The Institute has the only research cleanroom in the UAE, and is the owner of a very advanced electron microscopy facility which is responsible for training over 500 users in the last 5 years of operation.

Dr. Mustapha Jouiad, Microscopy Facility Manager and Principal Research Scientist

Dr. Mustapha Jouiad obtained his PhD in Mechanics of Materials (applied to aeronautics) and his Master’s in Solid Physics and Physics of Particles from University of Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France in 1996 and 1993 respectively. His PhD thesis, which was conducted in the famous laboratory (Center of Elaboration of Materials and characterization; CEMES), was awarded with the highest French distinction. 

Prior to joining Masdar Institute’s Mechanical and Materials Engineering Program, Dr. Jouiad served as senior analytical electron microscopy specialist at Masdar Institute. He also worked at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology as senior research scientist in Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials (AMPM). His postdoctoral research was conducted in University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) and Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL). 

Dr. Jouiad’s research interests are in multiscale characterization of materials with applications in transport, energy and environment. His approach allows large probing of advanced materials structure by means of novel techniques such as Analytical Chemistry, Mechanical testing and Analytical Microscopy. Recently, his  research has focused on the development/modification and characterization of advanced materials that possess high optical and electrical properties such as MoS2, Si/Ge and GaN.

Dr. Jouiad has authored and co-authored more than 70 publications in peer reviewed journals and referred proceedings (h-index=12 in Scopus). He has supervised and co-supervised three PhD students and four Master’s students. He is a regular reviewer for high impact journals. He is member of European Microscopy society & TMS The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. He was involved in the organization of international and national symposium. He runs many projects with close connection with industrial partners such as ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, EGA, and Emirates Steel. He is involved in many national and international collaborations, including some with New York University Abu Dhabi, Al Ain University and University of Manchester, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Iowa.

Leslie O. George, Fabrication Instructor, Research Laboratories Department

Leslie O. George obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering (co-operative plan) from Georgia Institute of Science and Technology (Georgia Tech), USA, in 2006. His focus was in the area of microelectronics and micro-fabrication. While at Georgia Tech, George worked as a co-op student in the Microelectronics Research Center (MiRC), CMOS group under the leadership of Dr. James D. Meindl. He also has an MSc in Operations Management from J.Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University, USA. 

Prior to joining Masdar Institute, George was a lead research engineer at the Lurie Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USA. There he conducted training courses and mentored a variety of students from different disciplines to realize their goals in the micro and nanofabrication domain. This included classes on safety, Wet processing, reactive ion etching, photolithography, etc. He worked on several remote processes for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) projects on behalf of external users and entities. Leslie also served as an after-hours Emergency responder for lab emergencies.

George’s interests at Masdar Institute broadly cover the hands on teaching of various micro/nanofabrication techniques. Since February 2012, he has played a major role in the retrofitting, commissioning and startup of this unique facility in the UAE. Over the last year, George has trained 403 researchers, students, scientists and faculty on how to safely work in this critical environment and achieve their fabrication goals. In this way he has supported the completion of over 25 research projects at Masdar Institute encompassing the areas of electrical engineering, microsystems, material science and mechanical engineering, to name a few. George also serves as the main contact for day-to-day operations management of the cleanroom and is also actively involved with the other core labs at the Institute.

Adrian Darcie Clark, Fabricator Equipment Instructor, Research Laboratories Department

Adrian holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

As Micro/Nanofabrication Equipment Instructor, Adrian is responsible for providing support for the process equipment and facilities systems used to run the Microfabrication Laboratory.

Adrian brings over 30 years expertise in semiconductor engineering and manufacturing, working in wafer fabrication equipment engineering, process engineering, product development, as well as device and systems testing. His experience covers a broad spectrum of technologies, including work in both silicon and compound semiconductor technologies and he has held senior technical and management positions with Intel, Motorola, RCA and Hyundai Semiconductor. He also has served as independent consultant on a wide range of technology-based projects globally.

Nellimala Abdul Shukoor, Machine Shop Supervisor, Research Laboratories Department

Nellimala Abdul Shukoor received his MBA from Sikkim Manipal University, India, and a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from Kerala University. India. Shukoor has over 30 years of teaching experience in the Mechanical Engineering area. 

He currently administers and coordinates all fabrication works for faculty and students at Masdar Institute. His role also includes the supervision of machine shop technicians and support staff to ensure timely delivery of the work orders, and the scheduling and implementation of effective maintenance of equipment, operational training, materials handling and related supporting services. Shukoor also serves as an advisor to faculty and other lab managers to meet schedules and or resolve technical problems and ensures that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied at all times.

As part of his role at Masdar Institute, Shukoor has developed and implemented machine shop policies and procedures, maintained an inventory of all equipment and assists the faculty and researchers with the purchase of consumables and accessories for their equipment.  

Nafeez Bin Taher, Solar and Device Testing Lab Instructor, Research Laboratories Department

Nafeez Bin Taher is a laboratory instructor for the Solar and Device Characterization Lab and the Digital Systems Lab.  He also supports other labs, including the Micro- Electromechanical  Systems (MEMS) Lab and the Masdar Solar Panel Testing Facility.  

In his capacity as a lab Instructor, Bin Taher  oversees the day-to-day operations of the labs, trains and advises researchers on safe and proper usage of the lab equipment, and maintains all lab equipment for reliable and proper functioning, including installation and commissioning of new equipment. He is also concerned with strategic development and expansion of the lab facilities to continue to serve the research goals of the various departments and programs in the Institute. Bin Taher is also involved with establishing and streamlining lab usage procedures and collaborating with other departments in development of automated systems for efficient usage of the lab facilitates.  He is also very enthusiastic in supporting Emirati development programs at MI, including the Ektashif program, the summer internship programs and various others.

Prior to joining Masdar Institute, Bin Taher worked in various engineering positions in the USA, including a number of years in Texas Instruments as a test engineer for semiconductor mixed-signal chips. In this capacity he successfully developed test programs and hardware for automated test equipment for volume production of cutting-edge chips. He also served as a product engineer for a number of years where he ramped up volume production of many high-end chips.  Prior to working at Texas Instruments Bin Taher worked as a systems engineer for Motorola and Cox Communications in the USA.

Bin Taher holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. His graduate research work involved the development of high-speed digital systems for wafer-level testing. While at Georgia Tech, he also served as the Public Relations Officer for the IEEE chapter in the university and as president for other student-led organizations.

Dr. Cyril Aubry, SEM/FIB Instructor (Microscopy), Research Laboratories Department

Dr. Cyril Aubry joined Masdar Institute in 2014 as SEM/FIB Instructor and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory, trains and advises researchers on safe and proper usage of the lab equipment and sample preparation. Recently, Dr. Aubry started teaching Raman and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Prior to joining Masdar Institute, Dr. Aubry acquired strong experience in the use of scientific equipment during his time at various different academic institutions. His expertise include SEM/FIB, AFM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 3 MeV electron accelerator and 300 keV particles accelerator, among others.

Dr. Aubry received his PhD in Physics at the University of Limoges (France) and his Master’s degree at CEMES (France). 

Dr. Grzegorz P. Brudecki, Analytical Chemistry Instructor, Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry Core Lab

Dr. Grzegorz P. Brudecki is an analytical chemistry instructor in Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry Core Lab at Masdar Institute. He has a broad knowledge of various types of analytical chemistry instruments including gas, liquid chromatography and spectroscopy. Previously he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Masdar Institute. His previous research focused mainly on characterization and utilization of algal species and seagrass native to UAE coastline, and their conversion to biofuels, including bioethanol and biogas. He obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences where his work was focused on organosolv delignification and extrusion processes of lignocellulosic biomass as pretreatment methods. He is author and co-author of several peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and conference contributions on biofuel production.  He has several training certificates in the field of chromatography.

Dr. Thomas Delclos, Materials Testing Laboratory Instructor, Research Laboratories Department

Dr. Delclos is currently a Laboratory Instructor in the Materials Testing Lab at Masdar Institute. He uses his broad experience in materials characterization to provide training and insight on the different tools at the disposal of the Materials Testing Lab.

Dr. Thomas Delclos obtained his PhD in Materials Science and his Master’s in Polymer Science from the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, in 2003 and 2007 respectively. His PhD thesis, which was conducted in the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology laboratory (IECB), was awarded with the highest French distinction.

Prior to joining Masdar Institute in 2014, Dr. Delclos worked for two years in the University of Cyprus on a European project to recycle nuclear wastes. He also worked in France for two years in a start-up company created by Rhodia (now Solvay) and at the French national research center CNRS. His research interests are in multiscale characterization of materials.
